The need for sharing content – a survey

Throughout the year we visit a lot of conferences, seminar and the like, varying from big and top-end meetings like Blogworld and New Media Expo and SXSW in the Social Media space to more industry specialized events like Digital Pharma, Digital Pharma Europe and DigiPharm for the pharma industry. But we’re still surprized how little of the content is actually being shared. Sure, if you’re there, you can experience it live: great speakers with sometimes even greater stories. But a recap of what has been said when you’re back home? Or what if you weren’t able to attend but still are very intrested to that specific story of Mr X? If you’re lucky, you’ll get the powerpoint slides, but a good Powerpoint presentation doesn’t give you the heart of the story. If a congress organizer offers the content in audio or video, it’s most of the time all or nothing. Against a premium price. And what if there are parallel sessions, where two of my favorite speakers are performing at the same time? How do I get both stories?

Results New Media Awareness Session Kwaliteitskring Noord Holland

My dear English readers, have no fear. ‘Kwaliteitskring Noord Holland’ just means ‘Quality Group Northern Holland’, i.e. an organization linking people together working in Quality-related functions (e.g. Quality Assurance, etc). There are several Quality Groups in the Netherlands, totalling some 2,000 people. Quite a community I would say.

I was asked to give a 2 hour New Media Awareness Session for the members of the Northern Holland Group. Good to see that also board members of other Groups participated.

Apparently the content interested the group since the two hours planned became almost three hours, without a break (actually, nobody asked to have a break). It was a nice group with enough interaction during the presentation and plenty of discussion afterwards. As usual I was not able to go through my entire slide deck.

It’s the end of the year; time for reflection…

In the relatively short existence of DigiRedo we have completed many exciting projects, met inspiring many people and gained lots of interesting new insights.

We have come to realize that the implementation of new and innovative forms of communication requires vision, an open mind and the courage to abandon status quo. We therefore consider ourselves very fortunate to have worked with so many people who exhibit these characteristics and it is only when we reflect on this that we realize that much of DigiRedo’s success was dependent on the vision, courage and open minds of our customers. And for this we want to thank you personally.

Starting a company in the midst of one of the worst recessions in recent history is daunting. But it’s not as daunting as drinking a glass of water…That is, if you’re one of the billion people who don’t have access to clean and safe drinking water. It really puts things into perspective when you realize that more people die from drinking a cup unsafe water than all the wars put together. Hence, we at DigiRedo want to do our part to help eradicate this horrible problem by contributing to Charity: Water

‘Charity: water’ is a non-profit organization which gives people the opportunity to start their own fundraising campaigns to help bring clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Unique to Charity: Water – and most appropriate for DigiRedo – is the role that new media play in helping to raise funds. You can set up your own website, integrate with Facebook, Twitter and even build a community. The use of New Media result in transparency, knowing that all Euros or Dollars reach their destination. No huge overhead. Moreover, through New Media, contributors can track their gifts to the point of expenditure.

So, it’s time for action. Our DigiRedo campaign is called ‘Bytes for Water’ and you can contribute yourself by visiting our campaign website. In order to build one well for clean water, $5,000 is required. And with one well, we can provide one village of more than 250 people with clean water. For 20 years. Every $20 gives one person clean water for the next 20 years.

We have already kicked-off our campaign by contributing 20% of the target amount. By doing so, we of course hope that we are leading by example.

And that’s our wish for 2010. Learn about New Media and use it to make the world a better place.

Have you already donated to Wikipedia?

Wikipedia. Who doesn’t use it? The online encyclopedia with more than 750,000 articles is visited by 340 million people monthly. “That’s one-third of all people on the Internet”, says Jimmy Wales, Founder of Wikipedia in his personal appeal to the internet community. “Wikipedia is the fourth most visited website and yet we only run it with 35 employees”.

Finding a business model for Wikipedia has always been a challenge. One can only imagine the amount of data requested by those 340 million people. Wikipedia’s budget is about $10 million per year, but apparently that will not suffice in the maintenance and development of the platform.

Therefore Jimmy is -again- asking for our help. In his personal appeal he’s asking for your donation to help his nonprofit organization thrive. Your donations with a minimum of $35 can be given here. Your money goes to people and technology, is stated in their FAQ site

The internet is a kind of YingYang. If there’s white, there’s black. If there’s full there’s empty, love versus hatred and of course pro versus anti. So there’s also groups anti-wikipedia donations, most notably some people on ‘Greg’ started a discussion on the reason why you should not donate money to Wikipedia. In short:

1. Your donation, via Google Adsense, will fund Wikia, which is not a charity.
2. Wikipedia is really a roleplaying game, with no accountability.
3. Why not donate to Citizendium instead, as they have real life details.
4. Wikipedia alleges that Brazil, Israel and Saudi Arabia practise apartheid.
5. Grade-school children can read Wikipedia’s pornographic articles about such things as anilingus.

My deep knowledge on Wikipedia does not reach far enough to have a strong opinion on these allegations. Some of them may be true, to a larger or lesser extend. What I do know is that Wikipedia contributed significantly how we collaborate, find and use information on the internet and spurred the Web 2.0 trend. The term ‘wiki’ is now common language in our vocabulary and I’ve gathered a lot of information about many subjects from their website. And for that I thank them.

Twitter in Pharma – Interview with John Pugh (Boehringer)

At the last DigiPharm congress we spoke to John Pugh, Director Corporate and External Communications at Boehringer Ingelheim. John is well known for bringing Boehringer into the Twittersphere, and has quiet some success with that initiative. Using Twitter to communicate with journalists -his primary target in his role as External Communicator- he “can establish a dialogue with them”, according to John himself.

John started in the new/social media space about ten years ago, the time that websites were still written in Comic Sans. You could call John a real internet veteran, in that respect. During DigiPharm 2009 he shared his vision of the future of pharma, and the role new media will have.

In our interview John talks about his passion for new media and the challenges pharma is facing when deploying new media into their communication mix. John is a firm believer of new media and focusses in the opportunities rather than the threats, like we see way too often around us. We need more johns….


Our first day at Web 2.0 Expo in Berlin

The European Web 2.0 congress by O’Reilly has started. After San Francisco and New York now beautiful Berlin is the place to be if you are anything close to a Web 2.0 geek. In the Berliner Congress Center hundreds of people come together to be part of a three day plethora of sessions, workshops, keynotes and networking events.

So is DigiRedo.

So what’s happening over there? Next to a way too small expo floor (last year much, much bigger) one can participate in workshops. Four different streams are available, all with a different focus on Web 2.0: Strategy & Business Models, Marketing & Community, Design & User Experience and Development. We are particularly interested in Strategy & Business Models, hence my first workshop was about ‘Building Successful Next Generation Web 2.0 Applications’, presented by Dion Hinchcliffe. Nice to know is that Dion is founder of the Web 2.0 University (didn’t know it exists). The titel of his presentation did not cover the content entirely. He went much deeper than only applications. Dion gave a rather comprehensive overview of Web 2.0 with some illustrative models.

Some relevant ‘take home messages’ from his presentation:

  • A recent ‘discovery’ from David P. Reed (he did a lot of research on networks) revealed that social networks are the most important aspect in the modern internet economy. As any good researcher does, the discovry is now known as ‘Reed’s Law’.
  • One of the Core Competencies a company should have when developing applications for Web 2.0 is to ensure control over unique, difficult to recreate information which becomes more valuable as more people use it. Yeah, made me think too but I guess the value of Facebook is a nice example of what he means by this statement.
  • A nice twitch to look at Web 2.0: See data as the new ‘Intel Inside’. In other words, it’s about data, data and data. And do something useful with it is a good idea too 😉

Yet another interesting development we saw here is the rise of companies providing platforms for enterprises such as Facebook and Bebo (social networks). So we have seen a presentation from TamTamy and have spoken to Jive. Also Yoolink offers comparable solutions, all which for the untrained eye do not differ too much.

Although SharePoint should give an answer to the ever increasing need for employees to collaborate online within their company, in many cases the usability of SharePoint does not quite meet the modern requirements of Web 2.0 user interfaces. Trust us, we have first hand experiences. Above mentioned companies do not only provide more user-friendly interfaces, but are specifically designed to establish communities internally. Personally we believe strongly in these platforms. Let’s face it, companies ARE communities and the time that employees accepted a plain screen with name, phone number and e-mail in Outlook’s Address Book are sooo over. Especially new employees (also known as the Millenials or the Generation Y-ers) have frown up with all the possibilities Facebook, wikipedia, blogging and techniques alike can offer. They now expect the same environment from their employers. Is your company ready for it?

DigiRedo does Web 2.0 in Berlin

Today we’re heading to Berlin, where one of the largest Web 2.0 conferences in the world. O’Reilly (yes, he did come up with the term ‘Web 2.0’) is the producer of this event, of which the last one was in San Fransisco.

It certainly promises to be a very interesting congress, with lots and lots of key speakers in the arena of New Media. There is a multi-track conference, high level keynote speakers, and expo, workshops and many networking events.

Welcome, MikiMedia.. our blog.

MikiMedia joined us on our trip to the New Media Expo. Miki is a New Media Specialist in training, and hence she has a sheer interest in everything related to this exciting new world of communication.

For some reason she wanted to impress us since we received this video she took, showcasing our moves in Vegas. We kind of thought that everything what happened in Vegas, stayed in Vegas. But we are honored, so we want to share her video with the rest of the world.

Audio Indexing from Google Labs

They say great inventions are invented simultaneously around the world. So I was writing yesterday about a cool feature in Adobe’s Creative Suite 4 where video is transcribed and searchable, today I learned that Google has launched it’s Gaudi (Google Audio Indexing) in their Google Labs. 

Although still in it’s infancy the application looks promising. I can’t wait to lay my hands on the API.

DigiRedo does IBC


Being a New Media company it sometimes doesn’t hurt to have a reality-check. Of course we know that traditionel media is wrong. And that New media, authenticity and communities are the way forward. However, the traditional media market is still a big market. A bloody big market.

Off we went to Amsterdam, to visit the annual International Broadcast Congress 2008 (IBC 2008). This congress is surely the biggest in its kind and it almost occupied the entire RAI (Amsterdam Convention Centre). Hundreds of exhibitors were showcasing their goods to an eager and media-hungry audience. The four hours we had available were ample enough to skim through the first floor, let alone the second, third, fourth, fifth… IBC Japanese tour it was. Seen it – been there, check, next one.

We could only stop at a few places and having so many exhibitors that surely was a pitty. Not all was equally interesting (e.g. the ‘new media’ hall was only an extension of other traditional media gear) but we did found some stuff we’re sure we’re going to keep an eye on, such as this handy device for levering your camera. Trust us, after four hours of shooting you wished you had such a thing.

After the IBC we went to the first Final Cut Pro User Group Supermeet, also in Amsterdam. In about four hours various presentations were given on all things Final Cut Pro. The most amazing presentation however was from Adobe, showcasing their next version of Creative Suite. One of the features is the automatic transcription of the spoken word in plain English, searchable text. A very interesting development for podcast producers and webvideo content creators.

All in all a useful afternoon, although next time we’ll spenda bit bit longer on the expo floor, and prepare a bit better.
